Interagency Access to Health Care in Alaska Task Force releases report

The Interagency Access to Health Care in Alaska Task Force has released a report, mandated by the health reform law, with recommendations on strengthening the health care access in the state. The task force includes representatives from the Department of Health & Human Services, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, the Indian Health Service, the Department of Defense and its TRICARE Management Activity, the Secretary of the Army, Secretary of the Air Force, the Department of Veterans Affairs and its Veterans Health Administration, and the Coast Guard.

HHS announces expansion of Rural Community Hospital Demonstration Program

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius has announced that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services will enroll up to an additional 20 hospitals in the Rural Community Hospitals Demonstration. Ten hospitals are already participating in the program created by the health reform law, which provides enhanced reimbursements for inpatient services. The agency’s announcement explains, “The goal of the program is to test the feasibility and advisability of cost based reimbursement for small rural hospitals that are too large to be Critical Access Hospitals.”

HHS announces $250 million in grants for Health Center New Access Points

The Department of Health and Human Services has announced $250 million in grant funding provided by the health reform law for New Access Points for primary health services in underserved and vulnerable communities under the Health Center Program.

Labor announces $14.7 million in health care career grants

The Department of Labor has announced $14.7 million in health care career grants authorized by the health reform law. The four grantees are the American Association of Community Colleges, Goodwill Industries International, the International Association of Jewish Vocational Services and SER-Jobs for Progress National Inc. “The grants will support projects designed to provide health care training and virtual service-delivery models (i.e., web-based services) to promote career opportunities in the health care sector,” says a Department press release.
